How Cell Phones Affect Your Sleep

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

Believe it or not, research shows that excessive cell phone use can affect your sleep. Some people refer to this as “cell phone addiction,” though many people will argue that there is nothing inherently addictive about a cell phone, which is really just plastic, computer chips, keys, and a screen. Calling someone’s use or even overuse of a cell phone an “addiction” cheapens the word, especially when it comes to real-life addictions that people struggle with. Nonetheless, there is a lot of evidence that supports the idea that cell phones can and do affect people’s sleep patterns.

The reasons for this are great, but also simple. Because a cell phone represents, to many people, the idea of being “connected” all the time, it hints at a need to be at the ready at all times. As such, people never really take the time to relax and take a rest when it comes to work or other obligations, or even simple social events. They’re always at the ready, even when out of the office, out of the house, or worst of all, trying to get some rest at home. Many scientists and researchers suggest turning the phone off when you need some “you time” and don’t want to be entirely accessible.

Further, there are some real go-getters who sleep with their phone on the table next to their bed or even IN their bed. Not surprisingly, these people report the highest incidences of sleep disturbances amongst those polled who both have sleep issues as well as cell phones. Being unable to separate yourself from your cell phone for even long enough to get a good night’s sleep is a sign of over-reliance on the technology and may even be detrimental to your health. There is little that could be going on that is important enough for you to sacrifice a comfortable night’s sleep on a regular basis. Obviously, this rule does not apply if there are true emergencies going on, such as your job is being a doctor who is on call or you have a sick family member who you are waiting on news from. But on a normal night? Ditch the phone from the bed area and your sleep is most likely to improve.

Cell phones are definitely a convenient piece of technology, but there is no reason to become entirely reliant on it. Be smart about when and where to use your phone, as well as when you do and do not need it. This will enable you to live a more fulfilling life, and also, to get a much better night’s sleep!
